Texas 89th legislative session opened today

Texas’ 89th legislative session opened today, Jan. 14, and will run until June 2.

Texas is one of only four states where the legislature meets every two years. The others are Montana, Nevada and North Dakota. All 46 other states have legislatures that meet annually.

The 181 members of the Texas House and Senate will have 60 days to file bills – until March 14 – on all topics under the sun. But many of them will affect public education if passed. In fact, in the 88th Texas legislative session in 2023, 1,294, bills related to public education were filed.

That’s because the Texas legislature is responsible for public education according to the Texas Constitution. Article VII of the Texas Constitution assigns the legislature the responsibility for “establishing, supporting and maintaining a public free school system.â€

The legislature allocates money for public schools, crafts legislation regarding curriculum, instruction, and assessment, and establishes mandates for districts to follow.

That’s why the 91ÖÆƬ³§ Board of Trustees issues a legislative agenda for each Texas legislative session with a series of priorities and recommendations that are important to the district and public education in Texas.

This year, the district’s legislative agenda highlights three key areas: school funding, safety and academic growth. You can read the full legislative agenda here.

And be sure to stay tuned each week as we post articles and stats on the district’s blog and social media that highlight our legislative priorities and help explain the state’s complicated school finance system.
