What is AVID?
AVID is a school-wide college-readiness support system that prepares students for college eligibility and success. AVID curriculum focuses on WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) to build student learning and performance. AVID鈥檚 mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

AVID Secondary (7th-12th)
鈥淔or one period a day, students receive the additional academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in their school鈥檚 most rigorous courses. The power of AVID Secondary is the ability to impact students in the AVID Elective class and all students throughout the campus. AVID Secondary can have an effect on the entire school by providing classroom activities, teaching practices, and academic behaviors that can be incorporated into any classroom to improve engagement and success for all students.鈥 鈥 AVID.org
The AVID Elective
- Teaches study and organizational skills
- Teaches academic and social skills not targeted in other classes
- Teaches content-specific strategies for reading, writing, thinking, and speaking
- Teaches students to work collaboratively to be successful in the most rigorous courses
- Develops reading and writing skills
- Develops deep content knowledge
- Develops habits, skills, and behaviors so students can use their knowledge and abilities
- Provides intensive support with in-class tutors and a strong student-teacher relationship
- Provides college and university exposure
- Assists students with the application process for colleges and universities
- Helps students explore careers through guest speakers
- Develops a sense of hope and personal achievement gained through hard work and determination

- 3,555 AVID Students in AISD (as of March 2021)
- AISD AVID Seniors earned a combined total of over $15 million in scholarships and grants in 2020
