91制片厂 supports Spanish-speaking students through a fully articulated PK-6 bilingual program.听听What is the bilingual program?听 Many people think of English as a Second Language (ESL) when they try to answer that question.听 Both programs serve students whose first language is not English, but they are not the same.听听In听ESL classrooms, students speak any number of languages, so the teacher instructs only in English. In a bilingual classroom, the students are heritage Spanish speakers and teachers teach content in both Spanish and English,听while providing accommodations and scaffolding as English language proficiency develops.听听
Campuses with a large population of Spanish speaking students within their campus boundaries are able to provide a bilingual Spanish-speaking program at their home campus.听 For campuses with a smaller number of students requiring services, a feeder pattern has been established along with transportation to and from the student鈥檚 home campus if the student lives more than two miles from the designated campus.听 Currently, 24 campuses in AISD serve bilingual students, including Kooken Educational Center, a Pre-K center serving 3 and 4 year-old students.听

The purpose of the FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary School) and LOTE (Languages Other than English) programs in AISD is to prepare students to begin developing functional skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in a foreign language. Students participating in the FLES/LOTE programs have an opportunity to听become proficient in the target language, as well as听acquire an understanding and appreciation for the target culture.听
AISD offers Spanish, French, Chinese, German, Latin and ASL at various campuses. LOTE offerings include opportunities for multiple years of study from Level 1 to AP/IB courses. In addition to meeting high school graduation and selected endorsement requirements, students participating in the LOTE program have the opportunity to earn a performance acknowledgment for outstanding performance in bilingualism and biliteracy on their transcript.
