See what the new Thornton looks like
If you’ve driven on Park Row near 360 anytime this school year, you couldn’t help but notice Thornton Elementary. It’s an eye-catcher and doesn’t look a thing like the old Thornton school building that used to be there.
It doesn’t just look amazing from the outside. The inside does, too, and you can check it out with our new virtual tour building of the new school.
The new Thornton, one of the transformational projects in the 2019 Bond program, replaced the original Thornton, which opened in 1956. The new state-of-the-art facility opened in August and is all thanks to the support of the community. (Read about the dedication.)
The new school sits on the same site as the original school, which was demolished in 2020. Architects and senior district administrators were purposeful in incorporating the culture of the school and its families in the design along with the needs of a 21st-century education. The two-floor, 105,000-square-foot building features pods for each grade with five classrooms each (pre-K – 6), a media center, fine arts classrooms, STEM labs, makerspace, collaboration spaces, outdoor learning areas and more.
Thornton is just one of the transformation projects in the 2019 Bond. You can also take virtual tours of several of the other projects that are already complete, including the new Berry Elementary and Webb Elementary. Just visit the 2019 Bond webpage here.
